Backyard privacy above fence height

I live in CA, zone 9, and I am struggling of what to plant to add a few feet of privacy above the current fence height. As you can see, the current Bougainvilla idea did not pan out. This spot gets good sun for 8+ hours a day. Was thinking of adding a lattice top, but not sure how pretty that will be, especially with the current fence. Would love ideas for a narrow evergreen shrub or small tree that will fit the bill. Even considering a deciduous tree if it's a perfect, beautiful solution. I can't have anything with a crazy root system either since it might destroy the retaining wall. Oh, and I'm not the biggest fan of cypress trees. :) Thank you so much for your suggestions.

bamboo will grow so fast and be nice for both of you. other wise, add a lattice topper to the fence and do grape vines.

agree with the bamboo idea... just make sure to plant it in a container in the ground. It spreads like wildfire otherwise and could possibly irk your neighbors if it gets to their property and starts to take over.

Bamboo only spreads like wild fire if the buy that type. There are other types that do not spread, so could be planted in your raised bed.

Check with your town before adding any height to the fence. Some towns have a height restriction.

Bougainvilla once established would work beautifully. My mother-in-law taught me years ago when planting to never disrupt or touch the roots when planting... but once planted they can be very hardy. I have one now, and it's wonderful. Another great vine here in CA zone 9 is Morning glory. They love a trellis to grow on... but they will take over the fence - the whole fence - which is great if you're looking for that privacy factor. That's what I needed, and I love it. Good luck!
