For any of my Houzz friends I'm a slacker and so sorry for not keeping this party going. I've had a lot going on and actually been embarrassed to report my slow to no changes. However, I do hope to get back in the grove and finish this room. All opinions have been taken in and thought about. I bought a few mirrors took them back and bought a few more, got a picture and found a chandelier I like. So I wanted to see if you thought I was going "BLING" overboard. I'm also now seriously considering the wainscoting and painting the trim.

Arrangement on table looks great!

Actually that's not the picture CDR suggested. It's close just a little different and smaller but I like it. My son's girlfriend bought him a picture and it was the COASTAL MIST. OMW I wanted to become a picture thief and told them not to give me a key to the house or else.

The bling mirror is 39" around so how high should we hang it?

Usually, you want bottom of mirror about 4 " from top of buffet.

But, lots of other things to consider and flexibility:

See how high the guys are holding it in photo? That would be fine.

Consider if you want something sitting on the buffet ( not really necessary).

Also, consider that you want the chandelier reflected in the mirror.

I think we judged the heightt with the hammer about 6 1/2". I have the chandelier on hold or in my cart waiting to see opinions. I'd like to put something low lying in between the lamps. Do you think the greenry on the table isn't too green?

The bottom of any given chandelier s/b about 30" from the top of the dr table. Is that where yours is hung now?

Use that as a guideline to where to hang your mirror.

A little more progress with mirror hung and chandelier I posted last week ordered. I'm seriously thinking of adding the wainscoting and was hoping that someone or Grover would please draw it in with their software app for a visual. This DR has drastically changed and I'm loving it but it still needs a little something.

Mirror looks great!! I think the flowers in front of the mirror are too small. Add something wide and narrow.

I don't think you need wainscoting. I like the simple beauty of the room. Gorgeous.

Oh lovely! I see many people have commented on both lighting/chandelier and mirrors. When we bought our house it was drab and uninspired, but we soon changed that with mouldings, paint, lighting and accessories. Here's a before and after:

Stephanie your dining looks great!! This site is wonderful. CDR I knew you would say something about my Pineapple but since we haven't started working on the foyer yet it's gotta home. I'll make that my last room! I also knew that vase was too small but that's all I had. What do you suggest? So let's forget the wainscoting and focus on the chairs.
I agree with previous post ... The chairs need to be recovered.

I think the flowers are fine, but just put more of them in a wider bowl. I think the dining table bowls should be more of an anchor (silver) and the buffet could be lighter (crystal), as you have it.

So, an idea would be to try the moss balls on the buffet and then place a long, rectangular or oval bowl in the center of the dr table with a tight, low floral arrangement.

The chairs would make the biggest impact now! The chandelier will also!

Just toured a southern house where I was told that the pineapple is meant to welcome guests. I knew that.......but then told that when hostess wanted guests to leave, she would discreetly remove the pineapple from their bedrooms.

So, in a way, I guess we still feel welcome as long as those pineapples are still in your front hall. LOL.

Robi, hi again! Love the bling factor! Are you moving the pineapple chandy to foyer? Agree with cdr, wait til new light up, recover chairs and see how much you love it before moving into wainscoting.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted or actually worked in my house but I’m trying to get back into it.
My sappy saga is that since February I’ve been through ringer with my health and I’ve never been a sickly person. I had the “C” word spoken out loud a couple of times VERY SCARY and have had to have more test, more treatments and procedures but I’m one of the lucky ones I’m going to be okay. As always, with God on my side and in my heart I’m able to deal with ever comes my way. So enough of me and lets do what this website does best and that is decorate!!

Do you like the new bling chandelier or the wrought iron?
My curio cabinet houses things special to me but I’m realizing it’s not working in here so I’m willing to take it out but what can go there?
New rug?
Table center piece? I know I can’t replace real flowers every week.

If anyone is willing to continue to help me make these changes I promise to stay in touch. I’m definitely on the road to recovery but I have to learn to take things slower and not overdo it. Thank you for your help.

I still think the chairs need to be reupholstered. The pictures above were taken very early in the morning with my camera and the attached pictures were taken late afternoon with my cell. Big difference in color

Robi, I am happy to hear that you are back on track and that this crisis has not weakened your spirit one little bit! It sounds like you went through quite a trying time, both physically and emotionally. That you were able to come through this with such determination is a testament to your strength and I salute that!

I will leave the decorating advice to the pros who have been helping you.

Robi, thank goodness you will be all right! What happened to the rug? It is a nice summer look without it, but I thought it "cozied" up the room nicely. I happen to like the chairs just the way they are and don't think you NEED to reupholster, but you might WANT to just for a change. The space where the curio is now could either be a place for a tall vertical piece of art or--a Grandfather clock! I love it when my clock chimes, it sounds so reassuring. I have gotten so used to it I don't even hear it at night when I'm sleeping and it's in the hall right outside our bedroom!

Oh, I forgot. I like the "bling" chandy, but it somehow looks a little small. Do they have a larger one you could try in that style?

Nancy, I thought that andI tried to find one larger and with everything going it was pushed to the side and now my return time has expired. I may be able to put it in the guest bath upstairs... in time.

I don't think you have to have anything where the curio is......maybe a long, narrow piece of art.

Agree that chandelier is too small. I would buy one that is rectangular in shape as in "Jane Lockhardt" photo. I like the style though.

Also agree that chairs upholstered would be an upgrade, but optional.

centerpiece. Again, the Jane Lockhardt is perfect, so why not copy? Long, silver tray in center of table. You can add nothing or something seasonal to it.

I know it wont be decorator correct but I have to live with the chandelier for a little while. It will be changed before this room is completed plus I have to save my "honey, you know I love you...." for something bigger. So I am going to keep my eyes opened. Right now I'm really excited because I have the perfect opportunity to get the chairs recovered:-)!!! I'm asking ....please help me pick out coordinating fabric.

CDR, I love the gray & white and the dark gray feather fbric. So pretty!!!. If I go with that how would you suggest it on the chairs? Do you think it's a style that's going to last? If I went with this would I be able to use my same rug? I've been shopping for a center tray but haven't had any luck.

Did you see the long tray on the buffet? Would that work for the table?

You mean the optical diamond? I think that is timeless.. I would place the dark grey leather look on the in back and on the seats. I would place the diamond linen fabric on the seat outback. I think the fabric would work with your current rug.

Okay it's been a while and a lot has happened since my last post. I've was in a car wreck, totally my fault, and ran head on into a tree at 70 mph. By the grace of God I was given a second chance to live. God is good all the time and All the time God is good. My house was flooded during the historic 1000 year flood and now with that my house and I have recovered. So now, again, I'm ready to make some changes in this dining room!! As you can see I had the wainscoting installed, had to replace drapes and moved curio cabinet out. I bought fabric to recover my dining room chairs and wanted opinions on how to incorporate both patterns and curtains to match. I really really want Silk Duponi vertical striped curtains but the sale I need is not happening. Any advice will be appreciated.

The paint color is Gateway Grey by Sherwin Williams. It's more of a greenish grey.

The room looks great. I think your windows are better off with no drapes at all. I wasn't sure if you wanted comments on the front hall or not.

I have to agree about no drapes in the dining room. Their only purpose is decorative/color, but I kind of find them confusing, too, with the shapes on the window and on that wall. Wanna take one set down and send a pic just to be sure we have it figured out the right way???

The centerpiece is not working with your chandelier. One idea would be to add a simple mirror. Would the one on the staircase wall be too long?

The front hall appears to be your old dining room, but moved into the front hall. Is the curio a corner unit?

The dining room has always been where it is. I was against moving the curio out of the DR because it holds the treasures to my heart but after the wainscoting was installed I moved it to the foyer.

I was kidding about the front hall, because it appears to have a lot of the items that were formerly in your dining room.

In a nutshell, the front hall does not seem to take on the more updated look you want in your home.

I think you could leave the curio in the front hall, if you surround it by a lot more updated items. I'd eliminate the small table. Turn the chair at more of an angle. Put a bold, updated fabric on the chair or replace it with a different chair.

Do you have any more of those long mirrors on the stairs? I'd hang three of those staggered to the left of the curio.
