Location: Hingham, MA, United States
This family had just moved back to the states from Paris and wanted their landscape to be an evocative blend of France and Nantucket. The front had to be low and open to the view of Hingham Harbor, yet full of color and a touch of beach grasses.
Rounding the corner toward the back yard is a dramatic hedge of Miscanthus gracilimus and PG Hydrangea, with a touch of Calamgrostis to caress your arm as you pass through the gate. The pool area in back is a cool blue slice of paradise, surrounded by borders bursting with bloom.
Monrovia
If you like your outdoor decor to be classic and elegant, but also unexpected, try this understated but lovely combo. Sheared boxwood cones (try Wee Willie) are surrounded by Japanese skimmia, a pretty, evergreen shrub (zones 7 -9) that flowers in early spring. You’ll get the wintery contrast of leaves and cones now, with the promise of blooms to follow.

The Todd Group
Now is the time to plant bare root hedging plants and trees as well as spring bulbs for that wonderful burst of colour following the dark winter days and nights. Your efforts will really pay off next Spring and you will have beds, borders and pots brimming with not only spring colour but also wonderful scent. When planting bulbs in the open ground, with daffodils the most natural method is simply to throw them and plant them where they land. Tulips look good in large groups of 20 plus and also in pots and need to be planted at a deeper depth of about 8 inches below soil level. Daffodils should be around 5-6 inches and crocus about 4 inches. With the different depths, you can have a succession of flowers planted one on top of the other in pots so your Spring containers will look great for many weeks to come.
