Kikuchi + Kankel Design Group
The homeowners desired an outdoor space that felt more rustic than their refined interior spaces, but still related architecturally to their house. Cement plaster support arbor columns provide enough of visual tie to the existing house exterior. Oversized wood beams and rafter members provide a unique outdoor atmosphere. Structural bolts and hardware were minimized for a cleaner appearance. Structural connections and supports were engineered to meet California's stringent earthquake standards.

The design intent for this modest home and garden, located on a tree-lined street in Culver City, was to create a family-friendly, versatile, sustainable outdoor environment that grew with the rapidly changing needs of the owners, their three children and their close-knit community. This became the site of the "Neighborhood Film Festival" where family and friends could settle into the oversized sofa, warm themselves by the outdoor firepit/coffee table, and enjoy a movie under the stars.

A wonderfully unique feature to the house is a screen in Bobbie's office that opens up to view the living room below. Simply constructed of frosted plexi-glass and wood, the screen reflects the roof line and continues to filter light even when closed.
This concept is repeated in the master bedroom as well. As the two terraces face each other from across the living room, it leads Bobbie to believe that this room was once a nursery, with the screens acting as primitive baby monitors. "The parents could go to sleep with each set of screens open and hear whatever was stirring in the nursery," Bobbie speculates.
