Kitchen of the Week: Warm and Contemporary in the Mountains
This open, family-friendly space in Wyoming is made for cooking, gathering, dining and lounging
When this Minnesota family of four travels to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, they dive into all that valley has to offer, from skiing to rodeos, and they wanted their ski home to reflect how they spend their time there. “We talked a lot about how they wanted to live as a family out here before we started,” says their interior designer, Jennifer Prugh Visosky. Then they opened up the social spaces for a warm, contemporary feel that fits the wooded surroundings.
The cabinetry is whitewashed oak with a gray stain. More warmth comes from the brass drawer pulls and cleat-like handles.
A tall cabinet and plenty of smart undercounter storage left room to keep this statement wall open and for Visosky to add two windows that look out to the forest. “There is a lot of wildlife activity out here — on delivery day there was a huge moose we were trying hard not to spook,” she says.

Visosky brought the wildlife theme indoors with a fresh take on Western art by Kollabs. “I never thought I’d do wildlife art,” she says, “but these put animals in situations where they wouldn’t usually be, like a deer with a bright blue backdrop [seen here] or a fox in front of a chevron pattern, rather than camouflage or something superrealistic.” This deer’s name is Wendall. Visosky is still helping the family collect more art to place throughout the home.
The family had mentioned how much they disliked the dark lighting scheme at their primary home in Minnesota. “So often lighting winds up getting value engineered; layered lighting should be nonnegotiable,” Visosky says. She incorporated cable lights around the perimeter and up the middle, glass cluster chandeliers over the dining table, toe-kick lighting, undershelf lighting and pendants over the island. “The pendants are metal, and they look like they’ve been shot out with a BB gun,” she says. They throw interesting light patterns and add a rustic touch to all of the clean, contemporary lines.

A rustic farm table contrasts with contemporary Mademoiselle chairs. The printed chair fabric is by Missoni and the faux fur is by Lenny Kravitz. Yes, that Lenny Kravitz.

Visosky used motorized Roman shades to unify all the spaces that are open to one another (look closely and you’ll see one in the living room to the right too). They were needed for protection from the sun and to help the family cozy up on cold nights.
In this sitting area off the lounge, family members can put their feet on the ottoman and snuggle under a throw while keeping the cook company.
Visosky threw in some playful Western touches while still keeping the look contemporary. The ottoman is a tufted black cowhide; the swivel chairs are leather; and she included another fresh take on Western art. The painting, by Mike Weber, is called “Silly Espresso.”
The family loves their new home, and they come out here almost every month. “I’m trying to talk them into moving out here full-time,” Visosky says. But maybe the home is doing the talking for her.

Location: Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Size: 750 square feet
Designer: Jennifer Prugh Visosky, principal at Grace Home Design
Visosky helped the family lay out a space to incorporate a large, casual dining area as well as an island with seating in the kitchen. Rustic touches warm the room and tie it to the surroundings. The backsplash tiles have a reflective quality, and close up they have a rustic design in a contemporary color scheme. “It’s a soft, contemporary tile that’s comforting,” she says. The very dark blue Paperstone countertops on the island play off the tiles. The other countertops are quartz.
The oversize counter stools are popular perches. “The kids practically live at this counter,” Visosky says. The easy-to-clean vinyl fabric adds a bold orange burst of color.
