Houzz TV: This Guy’s Giant Lego Collection Proves Everything Is Awesome
Like most kids, architect Jeffrey Pelletier was a big fan of Lego as a child. But unlike most kids, he never gave up playing with the colorful toys. Now he’s amassed a collection of about a quarter of a million pieces in the basement of his family’s 1902 Seattle house. You may have read about it on Houzz. Now watch the video to see how he organizes all those gold bricks, yellow heads, gears and more.

Beautiful job on the renovation: it's now a truly lovely, welcoming house.
That's just fabulous! Gorgeous.
Love how everything in your home comes together, just like Legos!
I absolutely love the lego room & the storage system you have going on in there!! My son would be blown away to see this!
Incredible ideas and beautiful ways to store .... love this article
fanatic!!!
Awesome basement!
My husband has been playing, er, building with Lego(R) since he was five, and like this man never gave it up in the interim years as many teenage boys do. His collection isn't nearly as large but his storage solutions are similar and take up a couple of walls and a closet in our guest bedroom (the "Taj-ma-Lego"). I'm not sure I would want so many of the models out on display in the house, but in the pictures the sets that are out are at least tasteful and seem to fit in with the rest of the decor.
As a AFOL (Adult Fan of Legos) I think your basement is too wonderful for words.
I have to admit it seamed weird when I saw you pull out the Legos and talk about them. Then you showed what you built with them I was impressed. Your home looks very nice and I believe I'll be looking into Lego Architecture.
OMG, AMAZING!!! The Legos at our house are out of control. I cannot wake up without stepping on one. Totally awesome solution and that big screen TV coming down in front of the bins was just icing on the cake. Great use of space. You guys did a great job. Wonderful home. Kudos!
Amazing! This digital art "The Apple" is just for your green apples room:-) https://www.facebook.com/376702885096/photos/pb.376702885096.-2207520000.1430307949./376716990096/?type=3&theater
So impressive! What a wonderful combo of style and function.
WOW great job!!! Love the dogs den, and so much more. I believe you have given this home a new life, very impressive.
Very impressive reno! Congrats on saving this house from ruin. Love how you balanced the bright colours with the dark neutrals.
What an inspiration! I have 3 sons and 1 daughter, all who played endlessly with Legos as kids. At one point in time, we had the Lego pieces all organized by color and shape, but that system got lost in the chaos of teenaged years and now they are dumped in mixed bins. Finished pieces are still scattered throughout my home. My basement looks similar to the "pre-renovation" photos shown here....which makes me wonder if we could do a similar project of removing the floor and digger deeper to increase headspace.
Love the colors and the details in the rest of the house as well! What a fun, beautiful, amazing home and family.
Loved the story and the house!
The million dollar question: Does Pelletier archive, save, or toss the original packaging that the legos were contained in?
Love this story, made me happy for the day!
How cool is that!
I would be in heaven living there. Your home makes me very happy. I have a lot of Lego's myself, I build Castle's 3'x3'x3' so my colors are restricted to black and greys. Mine only fill up 3 large bins and some fishing tackle boxes. How nice to have a bar next to Lego's, wonderful. A cocktail and Lego's, great combination!!!!
Shared this with my Lego-Nanoblock-loving-about-to-enter-architecture-school daughter! Totally cool!
Great organization-a place for everything. Love the bold inside color choices. If I were a neighbor, I would not appreciate the bold colors on the exterior.
What a fabulous home! You really used your creativity and talent to make it your own. You truly found your calling!!!
Brilliant
The legos are amazing, along with your organization, style and design!
I would love to pull this off as I approach Grandparent season of life. When our sons were growing up we had a very small home, so the Lego table we built was simply a large piece that had 4" sides, and slid under the skirted love seats to allow for the space to accomodate for entertaining, ...however, sometimes it was still sitting on the coffee table, after the kids were sleeping. Our adult friends came and the structured/non-structured side would quickly be seen in their lego creations...Lego guillotenes and rolling heads ... great Friday night therapy.
Seriously, what an inspiration!! I hope your kids enjoy Lego as well, what a nice way to share your passion!
How wonderful. I really enjoyed both videos.. Your home is awesome
Wow! The organization of this collection is pretty stunning. Nice work!
I know I've seen the original of the Lego Library. Looks like the Ballard Library here in Seattle, yup, right down to the living roof! I am not a fan of bright colors ... except I loved yours. Guess I just haven't seen them done so well before. Great job!
My 9-year-old daughter wants to live in this house, with all the Legos included, of course!! GREAT storage!
I truly love so much of what I see on Houzz but this article really inspired me to comment. I never played with Lego as a child (wish I had, might have been a little more creative today!) but I just love how Pelletier is so passionate about his hobby but even more so what an amazing organizer he is. I want him to come to my house and help me organize my stuff!!! What they've done with their home is incredible and how they've taken a hobby and made it into art in the way it's displayed is so cool. And speaking of cool, Pelletier just seems like he'd be a super cool dad! Really loved everything about this article. Thank you!
You never stop building with Legos!
My son is now insisting we do this with our basement. :-) Great home for kids!
Great organization!
I absolutely love this! Love the colours and brightness. Love the Lego all over. Our house is getting to be a bit like that. LOL. Wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
Unbelievably cool! You had me at organization, then you got me with your incredible building models and then your Cavaliers walked out!!!!! What a great place to grow up in! (Greatest HOUZZ post EVER!)
petitourson, The upper storage bins look like Ikea's Trofast system which is probably one of the most economical ways to get this kind of look and function. The lower plastic drawers are probably Sterilite which come in a variety of sizes and drawer configurations. You may be able to purchase them online. Ikea does also have a similar system of smaller plastic drawers in cases but I don't recall the name.
My 6 year old daughter is obsessed with Legos and has done every Disney Princess/Friends one out and we were just saying the other day how we need to make an area of the basement for her Legos and have them organized and displayed. Great timing for this article!
I LOVE IT! I own Lego's also and have since I was 5 years old. I played with them for hours and hours. This also led me to be interested in Design and I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Interior Design. I kept some of my Lego's but not all. My Children also love Lego's and have quite a bit. Lego's are so great and THANK'S for sharing. Your Lego Room is GREAT!
No wonder I've had "Everything is Awesome" as my ear worm for the last coupla days!
Love what you've done with the entire house. Really cool.
What is in his future ? A Lego - Play Museum For those children who's parents can not afford to buy Lego????
Bravo !!!!!
Anyone know where the bar stools came from? I've been looking for those.
Snazzy-pants! Love the bright colors, built-ins and Dutch-door.
Beautiful; I was particularly impressed that he used the word "Lego" correctly--not pluralized.
here's a tip for Lego organizing: do NOT do it by color. it seems like the obvious way, but by watching our 4-year old it became clear very quickly that when the bin is all one color, it can be very hard for a small person to discern shape and size. once we decided to separate the bins by brick size or function, we immediately saw our son's creativity explode. it truly happened overnight. with clearly separated sizes and shapes, it's easy to find what you need; within each bin, it's easy to see the color you are looking for.
Wonderful story and use of space! Makes me want to play Lego.
I love all the trim work. I grimaced at the "digging" part of the basement, but not because I'm against it -- merely because I just spent 4 hours digging a mound of clay (dirt) that needed spreading around the "yard" that isn't in yet. I can't imagine having to haul it upstairs to get it outside! Loved the outcome though. What a superb job of renovating. I've been to Legoland and think you could certainly top it!
Wonderful :)
My kids LOVE Lego:)
We even wanted to go to the Lego factory in Denmark, but alas is was 4000$ U.S. Each. Lol.
But your cabinets remind me of our very cheap versions. Lol
I bought many of those plastic rolling carts with wheels. Some have fat and some have skinny drawers. They pull out the drawers and take them wherever they want.
So my kids consistently rearrange how the Lego is organized.
People, basic, weapons, lol (they have tonnes of Star Wars Lego and so there are lots of blasters and light Sabres, lol).
Sometimes it's wheels and hinges, all grey pieces and then a bucket with just "weird" pieces lol.
If ever they want to do a wholesale rearrange, my only rule is on a sheet or blanket so it's contained:)
They both build things, save them and use them for a month or so, then they take them apart, and start over again:)
Lego is awesome. Expensive, but awesome.
Cool to see your place:), thanks:)
Everything is awesome is by our awesome Canadian (Calgary) pop duo tegan and Sara:)
Great storage Idea! I will be using that concept in my new garage to store small hand tools like files, nuts and bolts, nails, washers, paintbrushes...... endless possibilities.
I love Lego!
I worship Jeffrey Pelletier! Very inspiring collection, house, and family. Thank you for sharing your story.
Having lived in the Pacific Northwest for ten years, I think Jeffrey and Chris picked the perfect location for their lifestyle and decorating style. Kudos to them both.
I remember when they were little I tried "accidentally" vacuuming up the stray Lego pieces when I was cleaning... Then to my horror, my boys noticed the pieces were missing, told their Dad... They took an inventory and then ordered the missing pieces!!! I knew then that I should just go with it, it was useless to fight it. LOL!
One of their sisters' enjoys playing with Legos too... She's my artist. :) Their oldest sister grew out of them, but I'm not sure the others ever will. Oldest sister gave her collection to her brothers "on loan." She expects the collection back when she starts her own family because even though she personally grew out of Legos, she expects to encourage her future children to play with them. :)
And we kept all of the boxes... To my dismay. LOL! Stored in the utility section of the basement. I really want to get rid of them, but it makes my hubby and boys recoil in horror at the thought. Sigh. If I got rid of them, they'd probably just buy duplicate sets just to keep the boxes... So I guess I'll just walk around singing "everything is awesome." LOL!!!!!
"Gonna pick up the pieces and build a Lego house."
Chris Cassino, This is what you need to do in the craft or family room!
just learned this week that the guy that is the heir to the Lego fortune is worth around 3.6 Billion USD....mainly made fro the sale of Lego building kits....
I find the Lego movie alive and well in Pelltier's basement!!
wow. WOW. Your home = such a well executed plan for both reno above ground and below. As they say - "Everything is Awesome". Great job. You're an inspiration. :-)
Amazing!! Shows Lego is awesome at any age. As a collector, though, I must comment that the plural of Lego is Lego (not Legos, as some commenters have said). :)
I love this idea!! I wish I could do this for my brother. He is Autistic, and would just love this. Thanks for sharing! :D
I liked it !!!
All I can say is - whatever floats your boat. A bit over the top for my liking.
I think it's awesome.
My father-in-law passed away about 5 years ago and my husband has recently found his Lego collection which his dad had kept for him in its original Lego canvas carry-all! Now we've added it to our daughter's collection of Lego and watch her bring her imagination to life!
Thank you for posting!
God bless you. You are my hero
WOW!!! What a great organised space, I really love the pull out tub system….It goes to show you that you can have any hobby or collection in an organised space and situation.
Nice job! :)
Love it! Am also eager to get home display ideas for personal collections. I'm cataloging my collections digitally with CatalogIt (www.catalogit.app) but still need help with the physical displays! I also still have a TON of Legos from my 2 kids who loved them! :)
