For a brightly-colored purslane variety, look to Toucan. The small, succulent-like foliage grows just 2 to 3 inches high while spreading more than a foot. From the first day you plant it, purslane is ready to spread. Flowers top the foliage, remaining open from early morning to late afternoon. They will continue all summer and the handsome foliage will remain until hard frost. This one prefers dry soil and thrives in heat. It looks marvelous spilling over the sides of window boxes or hanging baskets. You can also use it to fill in around flowering annuals in sunny beds, or to cover bare, dry garden spots. This plant is quick, easy, and carefree. It might even need to be kept sheared back if planted in a smaller fairy garden.
