Emily Gartner Designs

Emily and I have worked together throughout the past 20 or more years on a number of collaborative textile and fashion-related projects. She is a true professional and joy to create with. I enjoy her ease in talking through the process and appreciate her willingness to be open to new ideas and suggestions. And, best of all, when you work with Emily, you will be sure to have laughter and a smile!

Emily and I worked in the same city for several years as professional artisans. During that time I sought Emily out, as her promotional and marketing skills were enviable. In addition to being an excellent artist and technician, she is extremely adept at launching and hosting events, promoting herself and others, and generally being on the cutting edge of current and upcoming events. She was constantly updating and expanding her own line of products, which included not only decorative, but functional home decor, furnishings and personal accessories. If you are seeking someone who is energetic, innovative and able to provide a fresh look to your space, Emily is someone to contact.

I had the pleasure of working with Emily on a Christmas project in November 2012. She was professional and courteous, and had a wonderful presence and personality; her final design was truly beautiful. I have also been welcomed into her home studio, which is an amazing collaboration of many of her past and future designs. I am amazed at her ability to create beauty, intrigue, fashion, and excitement out of fabric and textile they way she does. I have 2 pillows that she created using a photograph taken of a local building, and they are top notch. Emily is an outstanding artist! Ms. Gartner's work has been included in a number of gallery shows that my organization has helped sponsor in recent years. I have also had several colleagues purchase items from her collections. Her work is witty, with a great commercial appeal and humor. Much of her work includes sly references to iconic pop art or incorporates a strong sense of place. She works in a variety of mediums and is very pleasant to work with on a project. The Foundation that I operate is using her for two consulting projects in the fall of 2013.

Emily is a friend and a colleague. We have worked together on various events within the arts community of Evansville, Indiana. It is always a pleasure! Using images of stained glass found within the historic Reitz Home Museum, Emily designed swatches of fabric for a line of custom handbags to be sold in the Reitz Home's gift shop. Emily is very detail oriented and conscious of color trends. Her bags are evident of the time and effort she spends to ensure her products are high quality and fashion forward. She is very community-focused, and always look for ways to bring attention to the vibrant art talent in our area. Whether through hosting a gift mart at her home showcasing local artists and musicians, or getting together to discuss new ideas over lunch, Emily is someone I am always excited to work with. Recently, Emily chaired a fundraising event titled "Art Explosion" for the historic Alhambra Theater. She went to great lengths to make the event appealing to all age ranges while incorporating the local arts community. She brought out-of-the-box thinking with a creative twist to the table. Her outlook on the fundraising event was a breath of fresh air. When working with Emily, you can expect professionalism, timely communication and an open creative mind. Emily Gartner produces work that is beautiful, as well as functional. The one-of-a-kind furniture, prints, and handbags are perfect pieces to represent her community and her art. She is an active member of Evansville's local art scene and often times creates work that is specific to her environment. The professionalism she displays when working with others is crucial to her success. I have encountered Emily's work and her business-sense many times while working as the gallery director of the Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery at the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana. Emily Gartner brings an unwavering commitment to quality and detail to all her work. From inspiration for textiles to final yummy products, her choices are bold, tasteful, fun and clearly on-purpose. Emily is smart and fair. And all that homework she does pays off for her customers. I can't tell you how many times strangers have stopped in their tracks -- both men and women -- and asked about my handbag (the album insert style). I think that's because the originality, quality and fun of it comes across so clearly. And probably because I'm happy when I'm carrying it!

Emily Gartner is a very talented contemporary textile artist. Her works have shown in our gallery many times over the years (The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana - 318 Main St. Evansville, IN). Gartner's original graphic designs feature architecture and important landmarks in Evansville and the surrounding region, which are transferred to different fibers through a heat transfer process. Her creations are one-of-a-kind pieces because of her ability to draft modern designs that speak to a large audience and maintain a quality craftsmanship. Her pieces are loved by many and Gartner's love of her city and region are shown through these works.

I first met Emily Gartner in the fall of 2012, when I noticed her custom designer fabric inspired by the Reitz Home Victorian Museum's stained glass windows. As an art historian whose research focuses on 19th-century textiles, I was immediately drawn to her high quality work. The way that she combines historically accurate imagery (the fabric) with more modern features, such as what is seen in her Mid Century Chair Modern Danish 60s, is phenomenal. In addition to being a gifted artist, Emily is also a talented entrepreneur who is an integral part of the local arts community. I had the opportunity to see these skills first hand, when she coordinated the Alhambra Arts Explosion in September 2012--Emily organized local artists, art historians, musicians, and poets for a weekend long fundraiser to support the renovation of this 100 year old example of Moorish architecture. She is a delight to work with.
