Hardwood flooring on a ramp

Our renovation is well underway and is turning in to a nightmare. Our contractor is disorganized and doesn't share problems with us in the hopes that if we don't notice, then it isn't a problem. We don't trust their costs, opinion, or integrity at this point and it's turning into a fight to finish and have everything done correctly.

Our home was built the 19th century and since then has had at least 1 addition added (ours makes 2). Between the last addition and original home there is about a 3/4" floor height difference. The old owners solved this problem by building a ramp in the hall that drops the floor height down 3/4" over a few feet. With the carpet over it we couldn't even tell. We knew there was a transition but could not tell it ramped down.

Our builder said we have to use carpet or build
Up the floor heights and that will be $$$. Our flooring rep and installer says we can use hardwoods. It will be a noticeable ramp but shouldn't affect the floors integrity.

Has anyone done this? The ramp that is? The transition strip would be greater than a 1/2" and classify as a trip hazard or we would do that instead.
