I don’t think it looks like it’s dying. Personally, I wouldn’t give it any more fertilizer just now. Just keep it moist and give it good sunshine and I think you’ll soon see new growth. It’s probably working at putting on root growth.

Be patient. Your rose may be growing some new roots like Judi says, and don't defoliate. It's helpful, if you have more rose growing questions, to let us know your cold hardiness zone and give us an idea of where you garden, and what your climate and growing conditions are like. Thank you for comments so far. I'm in central ohio which they say is now zone 6 but i still consider it a 5. I guess my main concerns were the brown cane and the brownish streak on the larger cane. I do see a few bud eyes on the rose so maybe there is hope yet.

I might prune the brown cane off. I think it should make it.
