Working with SelectDecks was a nightmare. In early March, we contracted Select Decks to redo 2 levels of decking. We made it clear via email with James that we needed everything completed by 5/8, and he agreed it was doable as long as they got started quickly. Demo of 1 level took place mid-April, and on 4/22 we were prompted to make color selections. On both 5/1, and 5/6 we reached out to SelectDecks because the project was running behind. In May we had numerous phone calls with James' remote phone assistant who provided various excuses for the delay, usually blaming it on the weather. On 5/21 the assistant told us 'materials were ready for pickup’ (2 weeks after the project was supposed to be entirely completed, and with less than half of the demolition done). On 6/1 we called requesting an update and asking why we had not heard from James regarding the ongoing delay. On 6/3 we received an email from James stating "we anticipate having all the decking down this week", and requesting the 1st progress payment via wire transfer rather than using their online portal, with the claim that the online portal was ‘changing vendors’. This concerned us, and we requested a revised invoice properly scoped for the amount of work that had been performed, as well as evidence of the payment vendor change. We received no response to our request, and no decking was laid down. We subsequently retained a lawyer to pursue SelectDecks breach of contract. She sent a letter to SelectDecks demanding they finish the one deck they had demoed by 7/3. The letter finally got a response from James, who agreed to the terms we proposed - completion of decking on what was demoed by 7/3 in exchange for the progress payment and termination of further obligations on either side. The partial work was eventually completed 7/8, and Select Decks was ultimately paid half of the total contract amount for less than half of the total work.

We signed contract and placed down payment of $15,627.10 to SelectDecks in March 2023. There were significant delays to start of project. Our pre-existing deck was demolished in August 2023, leaving dangerous living conditions (a two-story drop from our first-floor patio doors which have had to be fortified by a third-party contractor to ensure the safety of our toddler) for over five months. They placed support beams in our property without a permit or inspection. We had to prompt them to get the permit. They caused additional damage to our house (our outdoor water spigot had to be replaced). We contacted the company by phone, email and over their online portal multiple times over 10-12 months with no response. There was no professional communication. The only line of communication was ultimately with a project manager (Jon (Sensitive Information Hidden)’s personal cell, who has since left the company. After giving Mr. Baldwin and SelectDecks multiple chances to rectify the situation, we terminated our contract in approximately December 2023. Thereafter, Mr. Baldwin failed to refund the deposit that was made in February on the contract. We obtained legal counsel and after multiple attempts were able to contact Mr. Baldwin after threatening litigation. Mr. Baldwin acknowledged wrong-doing and in order to avoid the cost of litigation and the excess damages, he signed a binding agreement to refund the payment in pre-determined installments. Unfortunately, this Agreement was broken again by Mr. Baldwin; he only refunded one installment of $3000, leaving $12,627.10 still unrecovered by us. We are now civil action with our lawyer while continuing to contact the Pennsylvania Attorney General's office to determine whether criminal prosecution is also available. As of May 2025, in regard to our legal suit, while attempting to properly serve Mr. Baldwin, three of his website’s listed business addresses did not exist, furthering decreasing credibility and trust in his company. Despite this, we will continue to work with legal counsel to recover the money stolen from us in addition to getting a judgment in our name. Please contact us if we can provide any insight and deter you from using this company. We can also provide the name of the wonderful company who cleaned up this mess and provided us with a beautiful deck.

Over one year ago (April 2023) we met with James to have him build us the deck of our dreams. We were told deck would be completed by summer of ‘23. Fast forward to today, May 2024, we’re out over $100k and all we have is framing done. Zero communication, blatant ghosting, complete ignoring of calls/emails/texts. I can’t urge you enough to chose someone besides James and Select Decks.

Hired SelectDecks last year to do a deck and landscaping for my husband and I in Pittsburgh it was 6 months over schedule. Had to actually hire a different company to come out and finish the rest of the work. Mr. Baldwin never kept us up to date or in contact with us. Was very unprofessional with not calling/texting/emailing back.

Brad, the owner, has been doing this for many years. He is a seasoned professional well versed in this trade. He will show you the pros and cons of various products and help you select a design that suits your needs, taste, and budget. His staff likewise are courteous, know how to get the job and clean-up done on schedule. I was quite pleased with their work.

We are very pleased with the outcome of our new deck. The guys were out working in the cold every day, making sure everything looked great. I'm still not sure how they did that, but it looks amazing. Our friends and neighbors can't get over how much better our backyard looks! Thank you so much.

We love our new porch! The whole process from the first meeting to the final walk through was very professionally handled and pleasant. We had an idea of what we wanted but couldn't even begin to hit on the details until James came up with some ideas to really pull it all together.
