Frequently Asked Questions
Mountain laurel handrails are a traditional form of artistic expression that our company founder discovered while living in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. These handrails use the branches of the mountain laurel tree which are naturally curved in wonderful shapes. Railings are preassembled and easy to install which helps to reduce labor costs. You provide us with your actual measurements. Sections are built an inch or so longer than actual and you cut to fit when they arrive.
Mountain Laurel Handrails come in preassembled sections that are easy to install. You provide your actual post-to-post measurements. A typical section is a top and bottom cedar 2×4 with the mountain laurel branches woven in between. You provide an additional board for the top and bottom to make a “sandwich” of the ends of the sticks, as well as the 2×6 top. Watch the video at https://awoodrailing.com/#process

Our log railings with peeled locust rails are the pinnacle of rustic style! We also really enjoy custom work, like curved railings and exposed joinery. We can do custom designs for the infill from our popular sunburst option to completely custom designs like checkerboards. Lumber can be matched to your wood species like red oak, walnut, or ipe. Unfinished sticks weather silver or can be stained to bring out the red color and give them a little bit of shine which also preserves the original look.
