View of the outside through the shade cloth: The patio at this private residence in Mahwah NJ faces west, and during the summer months, the heat and glare from the sun is overwhelming; making this beautiful outdoor retreat unbearable. Motorized exterior solar shades were installed on the fascia of the overhang to reduce the harmful effects of the sun. The goals were to create a comfortable living space, reduce the glare, heat and UV, and reduce flying insects and inclement weather when in use. A Charcoal colored fabric was chosen for this roller shade as retaining the view was one of the priorities. The shade cloth selected blocks 95% of glare, but still allows the an unobstructed view of the pool for safety, and keeps the views of the Ramapo River and beautifully landscaped property. The amount of coverage and openness of the fabric drastically reduces insects and inclement weather, and cable guide rails were chosen to keep the shade fabric from billowing in the wind. Due to their small footprint, cable guides are more aesthetically pleasing versus aluminum rails, zip rails or concealed edge options which were available, but not selected for this application. The Somfy motorization allows for push-button operation, and was also tied into an existing smart-home automation system which allows the client to control the product remotely. An added benefit of this automation feature allows the client to save on cooling related air conditioning costs. The combination of 95% UV blockage and dark colored fabric gives these exterior solar shades an 87% Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, meaning that these solar screen shades will dramatically reduce the amount of UV and heat penetrating the windows of the home.
Fabric Specifications:
Mermet Satine Charcoal/Charcoal,
Pattern 30.30
7% Solar Transmittance (Ts)
5% Solar Reflectance (Rs)
88% Solar Absorptance (As)
7% Visible Light Transmission VLT (Tv)

Homeowner had been considering construction of a pergola for quite some time, but was reluctant to do so due to lack of rain protection. Although there are several pergola kit retrofit products that meet most of their goals, none of them were a good fit by matching all. The desire was for a retractable patio awning that aesthetically matched a pergola, but was retractable, and provided protection from both UV and inclement weather on their south facing patio. Part of the goal was to provide a flexible outdoor entertaining area, but also to integrate a front drop shade to help reduce the summer's afternoon sun from entering the space; as well as the bay window and sliding doors.
The "Gennius", a waterproof retractable awning by Durasol Awnings was selected by the homeowner for aesthetics and function, with a solar screen drop shade integrated between the upright support posts.
As young parents, it was of utmost importance to find a durable fabric for the drop shade that not only blocked an adequate amount of sun, but retained as much view of the pool for safety when deployed. Mermet brand Natte was chosen for the drop shade. Both the retracting fabric roof and the integrated drop shade are operated by radio controlled motors and hand-held remote control.
The homeowner now has complete control of the area, with on-demand protection to suit their tastes.

Located in Kelowna, BC, this private residence takes summer living completely outdoors. With lush gardens, fire pit, water feature and views to Okanagan Lake, the homeowners have turned their back porch to a true retreat.
Well known for hot summers, the residents of the Okanagan area enjoy warm weather from early spring until late fall. The homeowners required a solution that would provide shade from the sun and protection from insects, while retaining the views to the lake and the gardens.
In order to make the most of their back porch, homeowners selected Phantom’s motorized retractable screens that provide shelter from the blazing summer sun and do not block views to the outside or the fresh breeze from the lake. The selected mesh — E-Screen 7510 — offers maximum sun control and UV blockage, thereby maintaining cooler temperatures within the screened area. The motorized screens were recessed into the porch columns, staying out of sight unless lowered.

After a consultation with a ShadeFX Product Specialist, the Gibsons elected to go with a “Kissing Canopy” deployment, a technique that places two shade units on the same track. Installing two 12’x16’ manual retractable shades, the homeowners have the flexibility to cover the dining and lounging area independent of each other, without compromising full coverage, if desired.
