Two Clopay Model 33 flush Luan mahogany doors with Long Panel windows provide warmth and a sleek upgrade for this in-town Austin home. The doors were finished using the Sikkens Cetol 1/23+ stain system to increase the doors' elegance and to assure that they look like new for years. (BTW, the "pea shooter" at the left door is a flag holder:-)
place architecture:design
Our clients wanted to create a room that would bring them closer to the outdoors; a room filled with natural lighting; and a venue to spotlight a modern fireplace.
Early in the design process, our clients wanted to replace their existing, outdated, and rundown screen porch, but instead decided to build an all-season sun room. The space was intended as a quiet place to read, relax, and enjoy the view.
The sunroom addition extends from the existing house and is nestled into its heavily wooded surroundings. The roof of the new structure reaches toward the sky, enabling additional light and views.
The floor-to-ceiling magnum double-hung windows with transoms, occupy the rear and side-walls. The original brick, on the fourth wall remains exposed; and provides a perfect complement to the French doors that open to the dining room and create an optimum configuration for cross-ventilation.
To continue the design philosophy for this addition place seamlessly merged natural finishes from the interior to the exterior. The Brazilian black slate, on the sunroom floor, extends to the outdoor terrace; and the stained tongue and groove, installed on the ceiling, continues through to the exterior soffit.
The room's main attraction is the suspended metal fireplace; an authentic wood-burning heat source. Its shape is a modern orb with a commanding presence. Positioned at the center of the room, toward the rear, the orb adds to the majestic interior-exterior experience.
This is the client's third project with place architecture: design. Each endeavor has been a wonderful collaboration to successfully bring this 1960s ranch-house into twenty-first century living.

Eco-Rehabarama house. This dining space is adjacent to the kitchen and the living area in a very open floor-plan. We converted the garage into a kitchen and updated the entire house. The red barn door is made from recycled materials. The hardware for the door was salvaged from an old barn door. We used wood from the demolition to make the barn door. This image shows the entire barn door with the kitchen table. The door divides the laundry and utility room from the dining space. It's a practical solution to separate the two spaces while adding an interesting focal point to the room. Love the pop of red against the neutral walls. The door is painted with Sherwin Williams Red Obsession SW7590 and the walls are Sherwin Williams Warm Stone SW 7032.

The renovation of the Woodland Residence centered around two basic ideas. The first was to open the house to light and views of the surrounding woods. The second, due to a limited budget, was to minimize the amount of new footprint while retaining as much of the existing structure as possible.
The existing house was in dire need of updating. It was a warren of small rooms with long hallways connecting them. This resulted in dark spaces that had little relationship to the exterior. Most of the non bearing walls were demolished in order to allow for a more open concept while dividing the house into clearly defined private and public areas. The new plan is organized around a soaring new cathedral space that cuts through the center of the house, containing the living and family room spaces. A new screened porch extends the family room through a large folding door - completely blurring the line between inside and outside. The other public functions (dining and kitchen) are located adjacently. A massive, off center pivoting door opens to a dramatic entry with views through a new open staircase to the trees beyond. The new floor plan allows for views to the exterior from virtually any position in the house, which reinforces the connection to the outside.
The open concept was continued into the kitchen where the decision was made to eliminate all wall cabinets. This allows for oversized windows, unusual in most kitchens, to wrap the corner dissolving the sense of containment. A large, double-loaded island, capped with a single slab of stone, provides the required storage. A bar and beverage center back up to the family room, allowing for graceful gathering around the kitchen. Windows fill as much wall space as possible; the effect is a comfortable, completely light-filled room that feels like it is nestled among the trees. It has proven to be the center of family activity and the heart of the residence.

How do you make a split entry not look like a split entry?
Several challenges presented themselves when designing the new entry/portico. The homeowners wanted to keep the large transom window above the front door and the need to address “where is” the front entry and of course, curb appeal.
With the addition of the new portico, custom built cedar beams and brackets along with new custom made cedar entry and garage doors added warmth and style.
Final touches of natural stone, a paver stoop and walkway, along professionally designed landscaping.
This home went from ordinary to extraordinary!

Located in a neighborhood of older homes, this stone Tudor Cottage is located on a triangular lot at the point of convergence of two tree lined streets. A new garage and addition to the west of the existing house have been shaped and proportioned to conform to the existing home, with its large chimneys and dormered roof.
A new three car garage has been designed with an additional large storage and expansion area above, which may be used for future living/play space. Stained cedar garage doors emulate the feel of an older carriage house.

We have been designing stunning modern garage doors in the San Francisco Bay Area for many years now and our work is evidently recognized by the unique architectural talent our in-house designers have in their profile and the years of experience in the garage door trade.
This San Francisco modern style home has a very unique architectural essence consisting of refined horizontal lineage which minimizes luxury to simplicity. Working on the garage door for this San Francisco Bay Area home was an architectural delight. The designer proposed a unique modern garage door design that no other company dared to manufacture. We welcome projects such as these because of the challenges they present not only aesthetically but functionally. The smoked glass panles are actually see-through all throughout the horizontal lineage while the powder coated steel frames around the glass tien in well with the home's window framing. The horizontal garage door slat design followed the home's upper level siding consistency while the over sized glass panels added interest and uniformity as they follow the same vertical lineage from the window above the garage door.
Creating unique custom garage doors for the discerning homeowners, architects and builders in the San Francisco Bay area is always a pleasure and a welcomed challenge. Flush sandwich constructed insulated doors clad with paint grip sheeting (cold rolled steel treated with phosphoric acid at the mill). The roof of this home also uses paint grip. Paint grip material creates a light grey (varies) color with a dull finish that is preferred by many Austin architects and custom home builders. Cowart provides clad doors using a wide variety of metal cladding materials.

Dynamic Garage Door
San Francisco, CA - Some of our most exclusive garage door designs have been crafted for the Bay area community. The affinity for rich architectural garage door design is well received by the luxury homes found throughout San Francisco.
This custom wood garage door has a sophisticated modern design with its asymmetrical windows slightly tinted and framed with silver steel frames that create a phenomenal combination with the horizontal Ipe slats. The garage door was done in solid Ipe planks to match the exiting accent siding found around the house.Refinishing the siding at the time of the garage door and front entry gate made a huge impact on this modern home that hadn't been touched in well over a decade. The refreshing new look and stunning appearance can be attributed to the custom designed garage door and entry security gate, both done by Dynamic Garage Door.
The project included a new custom designed garage door and steel/glass entry gate that have similar elements but are different in their own architectural essence so as not to compete with each other or the general asymmetrical design of the home.
In the last few years more of our custom garage doors have been installed in San Francisco for obvious reasons. Mainly, the quality, authentic design and aesthetic beauty our garage doors add to each home project we work on.
