The client’s coastal New England roots inspired this Shingle style design for a lakefront lot. With a background in interior design, her ideas strongly influenced the process, presenting both challenge and reward in executing her exact vision. Vintage coastal style grounds a thoroughly modern open floor plan, designed to house a busy family with three active children. A primary focus was the kitchen, and more importantly, the butler’s pantry tucked behind it. Flowing logically from the garage entry and mudroom, and with two access points from the main kitchen, it fulfills the utilitarian functions of storage and prep, leaving the main kitchen free to shine as an integral part of the open living area. This 2-story home with inviting front porch includes a 3-car garage and mudroom entry complete with convenient built-in lockers. Stylish hardwood flooring in the foyer extends to the dining room, kitchen, and breakfast area. To the front of the home a formal living room is adjacent to the dining room with elegant tray ceiling and craftsman style wainscoting and chair rail. A butler’s pantry off of the dining area leads to the kitchen and breakfast area. The well-appointed kitchen features quartz countertops with tile backsplash, stainless steel appliances, attractive cabinetry and a spacious pantry. The sunny breakfast area provides access to the deck and back yard via sliding glass doors. The great room is open to the breakfast area and kitchen and includes a gas fireplace featuring stone surround and shiplap detail. Also on the 1st floor is a study with coffered ceiling. The 2nd floor boasts a spacious raised rec room and a convenient laundry room in addition to 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths. The owner’s suite with tray ceiling in the bedroom, includes a private bathroom with tray ceiling, quartz vanity tops, a freestanding tub, and a 5’ tile shower.

The master bathroom is large with plenty of built-in storage space and double vanity. The countertops carry on from the kitchen. A large freestanding tub sits adjacent to the window next to the large stand-up shower. The floor is a dark great chevron tile pattern that grounds the lighter design finishes.

Shelves and a set of apothecary drawers help house an assortment of baking tools, ingredients, mixing bowls and cookbooks. Beneath the counter a drawer and a set of roll-out shelves in various heights provides more easy access storage for pantry items, misc. baking accessories, rolling pins, mixing bowls, and more. The kitchen island provides a large worktop, seating for 3-4 guests, and even more storage! VISION AND NEEDS: Our client came to us with a vision for their family dream house that offered adequate space and a lot of character. They were drawn to the traditional form and contemporary feel of a Modern Farmhouse. MCHUGH SOLUTION: In showing multiple options at the schematic stage, the client approved a traditional L shaped porch with simple barn-like columns. The entry foyer is simple in it's two-story volume and it's mono-chromatic (white & black) finishes. The living space which includes a kitchen & dining area - is an open floor plan, allowing natural light to fill the space.
