Located in a residential neighborhood in Cape Cod, this home is the perfect getaway for a family of four wanting to escape the city life of Boston. The four module home was set on an existing 28’ x 50’ foundation to utilize the existing structure and expedite the construction process. The new 2,775 sf home takes advantage of its natural surroundings with an exterior stair leading to an expansive roof deck where one can bask in the sun while in awe of the views overlooking both the bay and the ocean beyond.
This two-story double-wide typology is 2 boxes set on top of another 2 boxes with a single cut carved out to designate entry. To further expand the programmatic needs of the client and not the existing foundation, appendages of linear 2x2 cedar screens of living space, outdoor showers, balconies, and decks were added to the exterior. The house is clad in a contextual cedar shake siding and tied together with accents of gray cement board panels. With large expanses of glass and numerous operable windows the house takes advantages of summer breezes and blurs the division of interior and exterior. Furthermore, the exterior roof deck is complete with an exterior fireplace, creating the perfect setting to view the sunset and Salt Pond Bay beyond.
Furnished with maple cabinets and dark recycled quartzite countertops, the kitchen is open to the living and dining areas and visually connected to the exterior with sliding doors opening onto the rear deck. While open communal areas dominate the first floor, the second floor is composed of three bedrooms, two and half baths and a media room that is linked to the exterior staircase leading to the roof deck. The master bedroom suite features a cantilevered balcony and exterior shower along with an alcove for a desk and chair to act as a makeshift office.

We first renovated the existing ranch house's main level kitchen wing in 2008. Since our clients have a growing family and love their neighborhood, they decided that they should renovate the bedroom wing of the main level to create a master-suite with en-suite bath and large laundry room and then add 3 bedrooms and a bath to a newly created second story addition.
The clients wanted to create a smaller scale cottage feeling home and at the same time maximize the amount of space they could attain from the second story addition.
Painting the brick to match the new siding helps create a cohesive exterior reminiscent of cottages in the Atlanta Neighborhoods that are adjacent to this home.

For this house overlooking a salt water pond, my clients wanted a cozy little cottage, but one with an open floor plan, large public rooms, a sizable eat-in kitchen, four bedrooms, three and a half baths, and a den. To create this big house in a small package, we drew upon the Cape Cod tradition with a series of volumes stepping back along the edge of the coastal bank. From the street the house appears as a classic half Cape, but what looks like the main house is only the master suite. The two “additions” that appear behind it contain most of the house.
The main entry is from the small farmer’s porch into a surprisingly spacious vaulted stair hall lit by a doghouse dormer and three small windows running up along the stair. The living room, dining room and kitchen are all open to each other, but defined by columns, ceiling beams and the substantial kitchen island. Large windows and glass doors at the back of the house provide views of the water.
Upstairs are three more bedrooms including a second master suite with its own fireplace. The extensive millwork, trim, interior doors, paneling, ceiling treatments, stairs, railings and cabinets were all built on site. The construction of the kitchen was the subject of an article in Fine Homebuilding magazine.

This environmentally sustainable second home draws upon local vernacular architecture of Cape Cod houses and the casual beach shack, while retaining vestiges of the previous house. It is composed of three volumes: bedroom wing, indoor living space, and outdoor living area. The windswept landscape, spectacular views, and fragile ecosystem informed careful placement and configuration of the house with its multiple outdoor living areas.

Structure Home
4,945 square foot two-story home, 6 bedrooms, 5 and ½ bathroom plus a secondary family room/teen room. The challenge for the design team of this beautiful New England Traditional home in Brentwood was to find the optimal design for a property with unique topography, the natural contour of this property has 12 feet of elevation fall from the front to the back of the property. Inspired by our client’s goal to create direct connection between the interior living areas and the exterior living spaces/gardens, the solution came with a gradual stepping down of the home design across the largest expanse of the property. With smaller incremental steps from the front property line to the entry door, an additional step down from the entry foyer, additional steps down from a raised exterior loggia and dining area to a slightly elevated lawn and pool area. This subtle approach accomplished a wonderful and fairly undetectable transition which presented a view of the yard immediately upon entry to the home with an expansive experience as one progresses to the rear family great room and morning room…both overlooking and making direct connection to a lush and magnificent yard. In addition, the steps down within the home created higher ceilings and expansive glass onto the yard area beyond the back of the structure. As you will see in the photographs of this home, the family area has a wonderful quality that really sets this home apart…a space that is grand and open, yet warm and comforting. A nice mixture of traditional Cape Cod, with some contemporary accents and a bold use of color…make this new home a bright, fun and comforting environment we are all very proud of. The design team for this home was Architect: P2 Design and Jill Wolff Interiors. Jill Wolff specified the interior finishes as well as furnishings, artwork and accessories.

The after front elevation retains the charm of the Cape Cod while the added new spaces blend well with the old.
This 1961 Cape Cod was well-sited on a beautiful acre of land in a Washington, DC suburb. The new homeowners loved the land and neighborhood and knew the house could be improved. The owners loved the charm of the home’s façade and wanted the overall look to remain true to the original home and neighborhood. Inside, the owners wanted to achieve a feeling of warmth and comfort. The family does a lot of casual entertaining and they wanted to achieve lots of open spaces that flowed well, one into another. They wanted to use lots of natural materials, like reclaimed wood floors, stone, and granite. In addition, they wanted the house to be filled with light, using lots of large windows where possible.
Every inch of the house needed to be rejuvenated, from the basement to the attic. When all was said and done, the homeowners got a home they love on the land they cherish. Included in the renovation was a new kitchen with separate beverage area for entertaining. The kitchen is separated from the family room by a two-sided, stone, fireplace. Next, a bright, window filled sunroom was a must. Below the sunroom is an exercise room for this health conscious family. The basement was developed to extend the entertaining space. The master bedroom was built over the new sunroom/exercise room addition and the master bath took the place of an existing porch.
Two sets of two-car garages were added to the house.. The homeowners also wanted to be able to do lots of outdoor living and entertaining. Brick and Hardie board siding are the perfect complement to the slate roof. The original slate from the rear of the home was reused on the front of the home and the front garage so that it would match. New slate was applied to the rear of the home and the addition. This project was truly satisfying and the homeowners LOVE their new residence.

We designed and built a 2-story, 2-stall garage addition on this Cape Cod style home in Westwood, MA. We removed the former breezeway and single-story, 2-stall garage and replaced it with a beautiful and functional design. We replaced the breezeway (which did not connect the garage and house) with a mudroom filled with space and storage (and a powder room) as well as the 2-stall garage and a main suite above. The main suite includes a large bedroom, walk-in closest (hint - those two small dormers you see) and a large main bathroom. Back on the first floor, we relocated a bathroom, renovated the kitchen and above all, improved form, flow and function between spaces. Our team also replaced the deck which offers a perfect combination of indoor/outdoor living.
